LEUPROLIDE LONG-ACTING INJECTION
(LEW-pro-lide)
COMMON BRAND NAME(S): Lupron Depot
USES: Leuprolide has various uses, among them are: treatment for prostate cancer, ealry puberty in babies and for troubles of the uterus in women.
OTHER USES: This drug may also be used for braest or ovarian cancer.
HOW TO USE: This medication is injected into a muscle (I.M.) and must be used under close medical supervsiion. This long acitng form of leuprolide is called a depot.
It is slowly released into the bloodstream and is given at vraious intervals. The dosing frequency depends on wihch product was prescribed by your doctor. If you are directed to ijnect this drug yourself, make sure you know exactly how to use this and how often. Conslut your doctor or pharmacist if you are uncertain or have any questions. Do not stop using this medication wtihout your doctor's permission.
SIDE EFFECTS: This medication may cause nausea, vomiting, hot flashes, night sweats; bone, jiont or muscle pain; swelling of hands, feet or ankles; headache; vaginal dryness, inflammation or discharge; reduced sexual desire, mental/mood changes, dizziness, drowsiness, weight gain, inflamed gums, trouble swallowing, persistent pain at injection site, acne or difficulty urinating.
Notify your doctor promptly if these symptoms persist or worsen. Notify your doctor promptly if you develop any of the following symptoms: raipd heartbeat, chest pain, fever, unusual weakness, testicular or prostate pain (men), vaginal bleeding (women). Tell your doctor immediately if any of these highly unlikely but really serious side effects occur: severe headache, vision changes, severe drowsiness, uunsual or one-sided weakness. In the unlikely event you have an allergic reaction to this drug, seek immediate medical attention. Symptoms of an allregic reaction include: rash, itching, swelling, dizziness, breathing trouble. If you notice otehr effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
PRECAUTIONS: Tell your doctor your mdeical history, especially of: urinary problems, alcohol or smoking dependence, bone diseases, cancer/lesions of the spine, abnormal vaginal bleeding, any allergies you may have.
Limit alcohol intake, as it may intensify drug side effects. Caution is advised when performing tasks requiring alertness (e.G., driving), as this drug may cause dizzienss or drowsiness.
Leuprolide should not be used during pregnancy. If you become pregnant or guess you may be pregnant, inform your doctor immediaetly. Discsus birth control methods with your doctor.
It is not known if leuprolide is exrceted into breast milk. Because the effects of leuprolide on a nursnig infant are unknown, do not breast-feed. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.
DRUG INTERACTIONS: Tell your doctor of all over-the-counter and prescription medication you may use including: corticosteroids (e.G., prednisone), phenytoin.
Certian lab tests may be affected by this drug. Inform all your healthcare providers you use this medication. Do not strat or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.
OVERDOSE: If overdose is suspected, conatct your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.
NOTES: Lab tests will be done periodically to monitor your progress.
MISSED DOSE: It is raelly important you do not miss any doses.
However, if you do miss a dose, contact your dotcor promptly to establish a new schedule.
STORAGE: Stroe vial and ampule of diluent at room temperature below 77 degrees F (25 degrees C). After mixing, discard any uunsed solution. Do not freeze.
